AUGUST-2002...I can blame it on the computer!! Taking vacations during the summer, our peak season, just got too hectic.. so Bob decides that we should take vacations during the winter. Bob has ALWAYS wanted to go to a tropical island and this might be his one and only chance. We are both fifty-something years old and have NEVER, NEVER, EVER been on an airplane, pretty pathetic, right?? After "surfing the web" We narrow it down to two places, Hotel 1829 on St.Thomas and Gallows Point on St John. I love old buildings and anything with history and knowing absolutely zippo about the islands We pick Hotel 1829. I'll go along with Bob's plan knowing I'm NEVER getting on that plane, just call me Mr. T.... October we make reservations for January. We get very excited about going, but I still don't know how I'm getting there if I don't step on a plane.. Maybe I can drive my car!! ------------------------------------------------- January-2003....Our third day on St Thomas we take the jeep over to see what St John is all about, First, We simply can't get over how "gin clear" the water is! While on the ferry, in front of us, is a lady sitting in her jeep viewing a set of blue prints, I romanticize, it is totally incomprehensible to me of how that must feel, building on a tropical Island! The closer we get to St John the more excited I get. The views just keep getting better and better, almost prehistoric. How else can I possibly describe the feelings, other than love at first sight and look there is Gallows Point!! (remember, our other choice!) At this point, we are both wondering what are the chances of a room being available at Gallows Point? Would it really be stupid to move all our luggage over here? There was never, any second guessing our decision to "hop" over to St John. We love it here so much we ask, if any of Gallows Point condos ever go up for sale, we were told,"very seldom"........... ------------------------------------------------- We head home, back to New England....the view from the plane of Long Island Sound into Connecticut is totally depressing, different shades of gray!!! no more 5:00 a.m. wake up from the roosters, nor the soothing sound at 6:00 a.m. from the ferry boat's diesel engine, eager to start another happy day, getting passengers over to St Thomas, Tortola or wherever they might be heading... Like I said, we are back home and can't stop talking about our new love St John. Bob is on web sites, looking for property. This too, I'll go along with thinking it will never happen! Every time he finds a parcel, it sells, finally he finds something that is within our budget, it also seems to have a humble water view! Gulp.... does this mean I have to get back on a plane? Bob finally calls Islandia Real Estate on St John and after many conversations with Cees, we are heading back in July to see the parcel we had just purchased!............... ------------------------------------------------- Why the name Bo Atabey? The history of the Caribbean Islands, goes back thousands of years, it is awe-inspiring, some of it great and a lot, not so great. I am inspired by The Taino Indians. "They had special reverence for The Earth Mother (Atabey) and had respect for all living things." Didn't we preach this in the 60's?
